The team was established in 1968 as they were one of the expansion teams added to the league (the other being the Milwaukee Bucks). They feature in the the Pacific Division and are the only team in that division that doesn't play in California. The Suns were the first major professional franchise in the state of Arizona and was the only one for over 20 years until the Cardinals relocated from St. Louis in 1988. In the first 24 years they played at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum until they moved to the US Airways Center (formerly known as the America West Arena.)
When they first joined they had many people against them as they thought that the teams location wasn't a good fit for the NBA market. Stating that Phoenix was "too hot", "too small", and "too far away."
The Phoenix Suns are a team that has had over forty years of success but the main thing that rival fans will point out is that they are a team that hasn't won the NBA Championship. They have gotten close a few times but have lost out numerous times despite at times considered one of the best teams in the West, the only times they have made it to the finals were in 1976 and 1993. But lets look at their all time stats, they are the team with the fourth best winning percentage winning 56 percent of their games.
If you know about the NBA then there is no doubt you know about Sir Charles. Charles Barkley is a well known person in the NBA organisation both as a a player and for the things he has done or said off of the court. He played for Phoenix for five seasons and was pivotal for them getting to the NBA finals in 1993 and during that season won the MVP award. If you look at his rap sheet it goes as follows, he has been selected in the All-NBA First Team five times, All-NBA Second Team five times and once in the All-NBA Third Team. He has also featured as an NBA All-Star player 11 times and was given the NBA All-Star MVP award in 1991. He has been named in the 50 greatest players in NBA History and was a member of the 'Dream Team' American Olympic Team which many consider the greatest team ever assembled in sports history which in turn got inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame. Since being retired he has made a successful career out of a colour commentator as a studio pundit.
In the past summer the Phoenix suns have lost their All-star calibre star player Amar'e Stoudemire
many wonder how they will fair how will they fair. If there is one thing that is on the agenda is to keep All-star and former two time MVP point guard Steve Nash at the moment while they hit a transitional period although his future may not be secure.
Steve Nash is the player that many Sun fans want to keep hold but deep down don't know what is going to happen with him in the near future. This is down to many reasons they want to keep him because he is point guard He is a player who starts their attacks and can ultimately be the closer when called upon. But the main thing about The Suns is that they are in a team that is in transition and maybe Trading Nash would help speed things up as he is 37, which leads to many thinking how much more he has left in the tank but then again who could they get in a trade that would be deemed acceptable as a replacement? Will be a question many including those in the organisation will be asking. But with that said you can't over look the man's accomplishments he is a two time MVP winner, has been an NBA All-Star seven times during which time he also won the NBA All-Star challenge twice (in 2005 and 2010) and has won joined the 50–40–90 club four times (more than anyone else) and he has won a plethora of other accolades to his name.
So many will be wondering how the team will do this season as this last summer was a possible sign that changes are on the horizon. One thing is for sure people will see go to see this hot team whether its those who come from other countries hiring out their
Phoenix rentals to those die hard fans who live locally.
