Nestled within the heart of Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh is one of America’s great unsung cities. A great culture runs through this city, with a rich literature history, which extends to today’s scene, with its Pulitzer Prize winning young author Michael Chabon at the forefront of American fiction at the moment.

While it may not be the first town to spring to mind as a tourist destination that is only because it is sorely overlooked. Here there are great places to eat, visit and rest in with Pennsylvania vacation rentals being a great option for those looking for something off the beaten track with their holidays this year.

Here are a few suggestions for places to visit and things to see in and around Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

A Saturday Stroll Down the Strip
On the first day of the weekend join the local Pittsburgh crowd as they make their way down the strip to the warehouses. Here you can indulge in the finest cup of coffee in town, whilst picking up local wares in a bustling and exciting environment. There is a strong tradition of local steel ware, but also more exotic items, such as clothing, and a great selection of fresh fish

Andy Warhol Museum
One of the most popular institutions here pays tribute to one of the most popular artists of the twentieth century, Andy Warhol.

Young Andy grew up in this town in relative squalor, the child of poor immigrants, he spent much of his childhood rather sickly and confined to a tiny little flat. Here is where he picked up his taste for household items and groceries which became a theme in his work, as well as celebrities, which he was heavily exposed to due to the volume of magazines in the house.

Now the town of Andy’s youth is a fitting setting for the biggest museum dedicated to his work. Here there is a collection of over 4,000 of Warhol’s works including Paintings and Drawings, Photographs and Films. There are also guest exhibitions by some of the world’s most prominent modern artists.

The Mattress Factory
If you are still in the mood for more culture then the mattress factory should be your next point of call. It may sound like a place to sleep but it is in fact one of America’s most bewildering art settings. The factory has long since stopped producing bed supplies, and is now one of America’s best art installation venues. Here the floors are filled with bizarre and wonderful colours as artists in residence take over the space and fill it with the most wonderful art works, creating a truly interactive experience.

Mt Washington and the Inclines
You cannot visit Pittsburgh without a trip up Mt Washington and on to the inclines, just across the river from town. This is one of the best views in the whole of the United States of America, and you do not have to take my word for it, it was voted second best out of a massive list.
